Why Silly Prompts Are the Best Prompts

When kids are told to "write a story," many freeze. The pressure of a blank page is real! But give them a prompt like "Your dog is secretly running the government" and suddenly the words pour out. Silly, absurd, funny prompts remove the fear of getting it "wrong" because there's no wrong answer — the weirder the better!

These 25 prompts are organized by type so you can find exactly the right spark for any writer, from reluctant beginners to enthusiastic storytellers.

How to Use These Prompts

  • Timed writing: Set a timer for 10 minutes. Write without stopping. No editing allowed!
  • Partner prompts: Each person takes the same prompt and writes their own story — compare the wildly different results.
  • Illustration challenge: Write the story, then draw the funniest scene from it.
  • Continue someone else's story: One person writes the first paragraph, another finishes it.
  • Pick randomly: Close your eyes and point at the screen. Whatever you land on, that's your prompt today!

Remember: the goal isn't a perfect story. It's a started story. Even one paragraph is worth celebrating. Now pick a prompt and GO!
